Turkey, a crossroads between East and West, combines the riches of both continents thanks to its unique location. Between the Mediterranean Sea, mountains, and desert, the country offers a wide variety of climates. Its cities reveal a fascinating blend of modern and Ottoman architecture, with bustling markets selling ceramics, textiles, spices, Turkish coffee, and tavla games.

Admission requirements

Participants must be between 15 and 18 years old on the day of departure.

Your school

A typical school day in Turkey lasts 7 to 8 hours, with specializations in science/math or social studies. The school year begins in September and ends in mid-June.

AFS students are often in grades 10 or 11 and attend a local public or private school. Instruction is primarily in Turkish, except for foreign languages.

Your host family

In Turkey, it is common for the extended family to live under the same roof. Shared meals and evenings spent sipping tea in front of the television are common family rituals. There is no such thing as a "typical" Turkish family, as the country is rich in diverse cultures.

Although Turkish is the official language, you may also hear French, German, Italian, or Arabic spoken depending on the region. Good manners, often rooted in Islamic traditions, play a central role in daily life.
