Nicknamed the "Rainbow Nation," South Africa brings together many cultures, religions, and 11 official languages. Its heritage blends African tribes, European settlers, Indians, Asians, and more.

South Africans lead a relaxed lifestyle, love braai (barbecue) gatherings with loved ones on weekends, and their country is renowned for its beaches, marine life, and breathtaking landscapes.

Admission requirements

Participants must be between 14 and 18 years and 6 months old on the day of departure.

Your host family

Most South African host families have one or two children, but there are also excellent single-parent or childless families. They mostly speak English, sometimes also Afrikaans or Xhosa. The bonds created with the host family often last beyond the stay, and our network generally allows us to manage dietary requirements.

You will be hosted in the west of the country, particularly in the Western Cape region, in cities like Cape Town, Hermanus, Mossel Bay, George, Knysna, or Plettenberg Bay!

Your school

The South African school year runs from mid-January to early December, divided into four terms. The English-speaking partner schools accommodate students from grades 8 to 12 and are chosen for their cultural commitment, activities, and teacher motivation. Uniforms are mandatory in most schools, and the school day runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Subjects vary by school and grade. Sports play a major role in school life.

Many children speak two languages, which means they receive significant support to improve their English. AFS collaborates with GROW Abroad, a partner who shares its values of safety and support, to offer these exchanges in South Africa.
