The AFS program

Go on a year, semester, or term and attend a high school in your host community. You'll live with a family selected by AFS for an unforgettable immersion experience.

AFS offers training and activities before, during, and after your stay, and you'll meet young people from all over the world!

General information

Malaysia is a multicultural society: Malays, Indians, and Chinese coexist, influencing languages, religions, and cuisine.

As a Muslim country, its families may be of Malay, Chinese, or Indian descent. Malay is an easy language to learn.

The school system

In Malaysia, schools instill values and good manners. The curriculum is identical throughout the country, ensuring integration. Classes in Bahasa Melayu are held from 7:45 a.m. to 1:20 p.m., Monday to Friday, or Sunday to Thursday, depending on the region. Holidays are in March (2 weeks), May (3 weeks), August (1 week), and November/December (7 weeks).

At age 15, students choose between science, social sciences, or business. English and computer science are compulsory. Extracurricular activities (sports, clubs, martial arts, jet skiing, kite flying) take place after school or on Saturdays.
