Discover the true meaning of safari (the Swahili word for "odyssey") on a three-week adventure in Kenya. You'll have the chance to explore the unique landscapes of this African country's national parks, visit wildlife reserves, and stay with a host family from the semi-nomadic Maasai tribe, who live in a breathtaking national reserve. This program offers three weeks of education and exploration in a country dedicated to preserving and protecting its immense natural beauty.

Admission requirements

Participants must be between 14 and 17 years and 6 months old on the day of departure.

Your host family

You'll stay in the village of Maisailand, with the Maasai tribe, to discover their semi-nomadic lifestyle, their oral traditions, and the art of beading by Maasai women.

Leaving the region to explore the rest of the country, you'll stay in youth hostels supervised by AFS volunteers.

Activities

The trip will begin with a visit to The Wildlife Foundation in Kitengela, an NGO dedicated to wildlife conservation. There, you'll prepare for your volunteering at the Merciful Children's Centre, which helps homeless youth in Nairobi and raises awareness about the impacts of climate change. You'll also discover Karura Forest, Hell's Gate National Park, and experience a safari on the Kenyan-Tanzanian border.

This program will deepen your environmental knowledge, including visits to the Ngong Hills Wind Power Plant and the Olkaria Geothermal Power Plant. Friends of Karura Forest and the Kenya Wildlife Service will offer training on climate change mitigation. You'll also have time to explore towns and markets and sample local cuisine.
