Admission requirements
To be eligible for the Asia-Kakehashi project, participants must:
* Be a citizen of a G7 country or one of the listed Asian countries (e.g., China, India, Indonesia, Vietnam, etc.).
* Have achieved at least 60% in all subjects for the last two years.
* Be between 15 and 18 years old at the start of the program.
* Be in good physical and mental health (medical conditions must be discussed before applying).
Your host family
In Japan, nuclear families are the majority, but some accommodate three generations under the same roof.
The father is often the primary decision-maker, but the mother plays a key role, particularly in education and finances. Respect for elders and close family ties are essential.
Your school
In Japan, the school year runs from April to March, with summer vacations from mid-July to the end of August and winter vacations from the end of December to the beginning of January (longer in Hokkaido). Public schools have classes Monday to Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to the end of August, and increasingly on Saturday mornings. Private schools also offer Saturday morning classes. Midterm and end-of-year exams are held.
The Asia-Kakehashi Project, initiated by the Japanese government, supports Japanese language learning and supports low-income students, particularly refugee families from the G7. In 2023, 60 participants from 25 countries, including two from each country, will study for three months in a Japanese high school (mid-August to mid-December 2025). All documents must be submitted by March 30, and program fees are fully covered.
