Indonesia, an archipelago of 17,000 islands, is full of contrasts: volcanoes and peaceful beaches, bustling cities and isolated plantations, modern skyscrapers and ancient temples, Komodo dragons and tropical birds.
Its 300 ethnic groups, hundreds of languages, and Asian, European, and Middle Eastern influences create a unique society.
Admission requirements
Participants must be between 16 and 18 years old at the start.
The AFS program
Go on a trip for a year, a semester, or a trimester and attend a high school in your host community. You'll live with a family selected by AFS for an unforgettable immersion experience.
AFS offers training, orientation, and activities before, during, and after your stay, and you'll meet young people from all over the world!
The school system
The school day in Indonesia begins with the "Pledging Allegiance to the Flag" ceremony, often in the courtyard. Uniforms are mandatory, and classes are in Bahasa Indonesia. The school year runs from mid-July to mid-June, divided into two semesters separated by the December holidays.
Secondary school is divided into "junior" (ages 12-15) and "senior" (ages 16-18). AFS participants are generally in the penultimate or final year of the "senior" year. Two main streams exist: IPA (science) or IPS (social sciences), each with its own specific subjects. Some schools offer language programs.
