With over a billion inhabitants, India fascinates with its blend of cultures and traditions. "Athithi Devo Bhava" means "the guest is God."
Discover temples, skyscrapers, and the Himalayas by living with a host family who will immerse you in a warm and diverse community.
Students must be between 15 years and 6 months and 17 years and 6 months old on the day of departure.
In India, families are often large, sometimes three generations under the same roof, although many urban families today limit themselves to one or two children. Religion strongly influences eating habits: many families are vegetarian, and Muslims avoid pork. India is not recommended for students with allergies.
Peace and quiet are rare in the city, where noise, crowds, and activity reign. Living in India means stepping out of your comfort zone and discovering something new every day. Your host family will speak English, but you'll likely hear one of the 120 local languages!
With a population of one billion, competition for school, university, and employment is intense in India. Students often attend private tutoring, although this is not expected of international students.
School generally lasts half a day or two-thirds of a day. Many attend private schools for a better education, but AFS India also welcomes students from Kendra Vidyalaya, good public schools for families of civil servants. The studies there are demanding and theoretical. Although instruction is in English, you will have the opportunity to learn Hindi.
AFS helps people of all ages and backgrounds develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to connect with diverse people, succeed in a global environment, and contribute to a positive impact on the world.
