Iceland offers a fascinating combination of glaciers and hot springs, as well as geysers, volcanoes, and lava deserts. Looking up at the sky, you can also admire the spectacular Northern Lights. It's no wonder Icelanders enjoy outdoor activities: swimming, skiing, and horseback riding.

Admission requirements

Participants must be between 15.8 and 18.6 years old on the day of departure.

The AFS program

You'll be leaving for a year, a semester, or even a trimester. You'll attend high school in the community where you'll be living. You'll have the opportunity to be hosted by a family carefully selected by AFS so you can enjoy an immersive stay that will leave you with unforgettable memories.

AFS offers training, orientation, and activities before, during, and after your stay. You'll meet young people from all over the world.

The school system

Schools in Iceland begin in late August or early September. The school year ends in late May, after exams. The relationship between students and teachers is relaxed. AFS Iceland lends school books, which must, of course, be returned at the end of the year. All schools will have an AFS representative (teacher, principal, or student) present, and their role is to support students in their integration.

General information

Placements are made throughout Iceland, including far from Reykjavik – the capital, which is home to more than half of the country's 300,000 inhabitants. Icelandic is a North Germanic language, closely related to Danish, Swedish, and Norwegian. Icelandic courses are organized free of charge by AFS Iceland, with the number of hours varying from 10 to 40.
