Home to the European Union and NATO, Belgium has been influenced by France, the Netherlands, Austria, and Spain, resulting in a blend of cultures both modern and traditional. Your program will take place in the south of Belgium, the predominantly French-speaking region of Wallonia.
Young Belgians generally enjoy sports, especially football and cycling, as well as going to concerts, the cinema, or scouts on weekends. Your social life will likely center around family and a small group of friends.
Participants must be between 15.8 and 18.8 years old on the day of departure.
You'll be leaving for a year, a semester, or even a trimester. You'll attend high school in the community where you'll be living. You'll have the opportunity to be hosted by a family carefully selected by AFS so you can enjoy an immersive stay that will leave you with unforgettable memories.
AFS offers training, orientation, and activities before, during, and after your stay. You'll meet young people from all over the world.
The vast majority of schools are coeducational. School education (compulsory until age 18) is rather intellectual (based on the acquisition of knowledge) and quite demanding. Since it is normal to study for two or three hours every evening and on weekends, this means that little time is devoted to artistic education. Most students participate in these types of activities outside of school. Sports activities are sometimes linked to school, but most team or competitive sports take place only during free time (Wednesday afternoons and weekends).
AFS students are generally enrolled in what are called "upper secondary schools," but if you wish, it is also possible to enroll in "technical schools." At the end of the program, you will receive a certificate of course participation and an evaluation of the academic work completed during your stay.
AFS helps people of all ages and backgrounds develop the knowledge, skills, and understanding needed to connect with diverse people, succeed in a global environment, and contribute to a positive impact on the world.
