Discover Egypt, the land of the pyramids and one of the oldest histories in the world! Explore bazaars, temples, and the desert, and stay with a local family to learn a widely spoken Arabic dialect.

This unique country blends ancient traditions, Islam, Catholicism, arts, Middle Eastern culture, and Western influences. An ideal adventure for adventurous souls!

Admission requirements

Participants must be between 15 and 17 years old on the day of departure.

Your host family

In Egypt, family is central and includes parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, and cousins. In the countryside, family structures remain very traditional, while in the city, they are more flexible. In urban areas, you'll likely live in an apartment rather than with extended family.

Egyptian mothers are proud of their cooking and happy for you to try everything! AFS students live all over Egypt, often in urban or suburban areas, in cities like Alexandria, Cairo, Giza, or Port Said.

The school system

The school year in Egypt runs from September to May, with a two-week vacation in January. The school week runs from Sunday to Thursday.

You will likely study at a private school with a uniform, or at an American international school following the US/Canada system. Classes may be taught in English, French, or only in Arabic, depending on the institution.
