The land of merengue and bachata—local musical genres—is a unique blend of European, African, and Native American populations. Proud of their mixed heritage and known for their great sense of humor, Dominicans will be happy to introduce you to everything that, to them, is muy dominicano. You'll feel very welcome in this island country of rainforests, deserts, swamps, and white-sand beaches, with the highest mountains and deepest valleys in the Caribbean.
Admission requirements
Participants must be between 15.5 and 18.5 years old on the day of departure.
The AFS program
You'll be leaving for a year, a semester, or even a trimester. You'll attend high school in the community where you'll be living. You'll have the opportunity to be hosted by a family carefully selected by AFS so you can enjoy an immersive stay that will leave you with unforgettable memories.
AFS offers training, orientation, and activities before, during, and after your stay. You'll meet young people from all over the world.
The school system
The school year begins in September and ends in June, Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. The main extracurricular activity is sports. School books are reimbursed by AFS Dominican Republic. A uniform is mandatory and at the participant's expense (bring a pair of black shoes and running shoes).
