The AFS program in Argentina and Uruguay

You’ll spend a year, semester, or trimester attending high school in your host community. A carefully selected AFS host family will welcome you for a fully immersive and memorable experience.

AFS provides training, orientation, and activities before, during, and after your stay. You’ll connect with young people from around the world.

The Argentine school system

The school year in Argentina begins in mid-March and ends in early December, with a two-week break in July. It is divided into two semesters with exams each term. Classes are held Monday through Friday, either in the morning (7:00 a.m.–12:00 p.m.) or in the afternoon (1:00 p.m.–6:00 p.m.), depending on the school. Students stay in the same class while teachers rotate between classrooms.

Schools can be public or private, and instruction is either general or vocational. Wearing a uniform is mandatory and the participant's responsibility. You will choose 11 core subjects, including: Spanish, literature, geography, biology, foreign languages, and mathematics. Additional subjects vary depending on the school's teaching style.
