AFS Relaunches Study Abroad Programs for 2020
Gradual Resumption of AFS Programs
Despite the ongoing impact of the pandemic, AFS announces the gradual resumption of its study abroad programs in 2020. To date, more than 500 young people have already begun their adventure in some twenty countries. The safety of participants remains the top priority: no country can host without proving that it meets all health and safety standards. Our teams are closely monitoring the situation to ensure everyone’s safety.
AFS anticipates that several other destinations will reopen soon and hopes to offer the majority of its programs in 2021. 2020 participants will also be able to take advantage of a virtual module designed by the University of Pennsylvania, leading to a certificate, to develop skills useful for leadership and social impact.
New Virtual and Hybrid Programs
For those not wishing to travel, AFS has launched:
- AFS Academies: short programs on human rights, STEM, languages, cultures, and sustainable development.
- AFS Global You Adventurer: Virtual exchanges allowing you to meet young people from around the world and earn the AFS Global Skills Certificate.
Registration for 2021 is open. AFS Canada and its volunteers are ready to support you!
AFS Response to COVID-19
When the pandemic was declared, AFS had to suspend its programs and repatriated more than 7,000 young people in record time. One participant said: “I am very satisfied with AFS’s actions. I appreciated all the support during my repatriation.”
For those who remained in Canada longer, the AFS network ensured their safety. In response to the suspended programs, AFS launched an online program focused on the Global Skills Certificate, addressing flexibility, resilience, and crisis management. More than 5,800 young people participated in 650 sessions in five languages. This program is a finalist for the PIEoneer of the Year award and has been adopted by other international organizations.
