The AFS Interculture Canada Foundation is committed to helping young people go abroad, regardless of their financial situation. That’s why it works with businesses, community sponsors, and individual donors to help fund AFS programs through full and partial scholarships.

Frequently Asked Questions About Scholarships

The participant who receives a scholarship agrees to :

  • Participate in the Intercultural Competence Certification Program
  • Conduct a minimum of 6 hours of volunteer work for AFS Interculture Canada upon your return

The Foundation offers regular scholarships of up to:

– $5,000 for a one-year academic program
– $4,000 for a one-semester academic program

Please note that participants in adult programs are not eligible for scholarships.

Scholarships are available to participants enrolled in an AFS program, whose application has been accepted by the Canadian office, whose participation agreement has been signed, and who have paid the $750 deposit. Participants must also meet the admission criteria of the host countries and demonstrate genuine financial need.

  • Complete the application form. The application form is available here.
  • Complete your application on our online application platform once you receive the application form.
  • Ensure you complete and submit all the information requested in Form 10 – AFS Scholarship (included in the online application).
  • Pay the $750 application fee and submit the duly signed participation agreement once accepted by AFS Canada.
  • Submit your application before the scholarship application deadline.
  • Summer departure (June, July, August or September, depending on the destination): February 1st
  • Winter departure (January, February or March, depending on the destination): August 1st

Yes. The AFS Foundation offers scholarships annually; the total amount awarded each year varies based on resource availability. Participants can only apply for a scholarship during the pre-departure selection process.

The likelihood of receiving a scholarship depends on the financial need of the participant and the quality of the application. The Foundation makes significant efforts to help people who wish to go abroad realize their dreams. In order to receive our financial support, the applicant must meet all of these selection criteria.

The care you take in your application is important. The selection committee will be influenced by how you demonstrate your motivation and by your letters of recommendation.
